open Promoting Your blog

How can I use BlogRovR to promote my blog?

You can create a button called a chiclet to subcribe readers to your blog in RovR and put it in your blog. This will let subscribers see your blog posts wherever they surf that you've blogged about!

Create a chiclet by clicking on the at the very bottom of your BlogRovR homepage.

You can then choose from different looks for the chiclet and specify your blog feed's url. You'll then see the code you can cut and paste into your blog template to add the chiclet.

I subscribed to my blog in BlogRovR, but don't see my post where I should.

There are a few reasons why you may not see a post at a page you're linking to.

  • It takes RovR a few hours to read a new feed.
  • Your blog feed may not be a full feed. There isn't enough information in partial feeds for RovR to find relevance.
  • The link or the page being viewed may have extraneous html parameters. RovR doesn't always know how to strip these parameters, which look like "?param=value" after the normal URL.
  • The page you're referencing may have been redirected. Check the URL being referred to in the post and the URL which shows up in the page you're referring to. RovR doesn't always know how to follow redirects. For example, "www.meebo.com" almost never works, as it gets changed into things like "www25.meebo.com" by meebo.
  • The post may be older than we keep. How long we keep blog posts varies with a number of things, but if your post is older than 4 months, it may have aged out of our index.

Why should I put a chiclet on my blog?

For many blogs, BlogRovR is the largest source of feed-based subscribers, or second only to Google Reader.

The chiclet will allow your users to subscribe to your blog in their BlogRovR account; which means they'll get shown your post summary wherever on the web you've written about. If your blog becomes very "popular and influential" it will start to show up in the tray whenever you write about something someone else popular and influential writes about, without your having linked to them directly.

What is an OPML file?

OPML files are used by feed readers to store the lists of blogs. All feed readers can export your subscriptions as OPML files and you'll find instructions on how to do it on their websites.

Google also has information on how to export OPML files from common feed readers here.

Roboform sometimes doesn't recognize pages it used to offer to fill?

We have seen this, but don't yet know how to fix it. Sometimes roboform doesn't recognize a page it ought to when RovR is turned on. The workaround is to turn off BlogRovR temporarily, by pressing the dog toolbar button. Roboform will then let you log into or fill the webpage. Turn RovR back on clicking on the dog toolbar button again.
